Scoubidou
Scoubidou is a fad in certain countries
in 2004 which involves the knotting of plastic tubes.
The scoubidous are supple, round, hollow
plastic tubes of approximately 80 centimeters in length.
They are sold in various colours, sizes and types. The
tubes can be used to make various items by binding them
together with special knots. Young and old make key chains,
friendship bands and other trinkets. Scoubidou originates
in France, where it was already a rage in the 1960s. The
creations possible with Scoubidou are similar in many
ways to traditional Corn dollys.
Most of the knots used in Scoubidou were
known long before the current fad. They were executed
in Bast and used for similar purposes as scoubidou proper
today.
Scoubidous are also know as Bondoogle
in the USA and are now imported into the UK by Activity
Plus Ltd . Examples of some of the knots can also be seen
on their website.
In July 2004 German and Dutch research
showed that scoubidou appears to contain an excessive
amount of phthalates.
