TOKYO: Japan's fashion
industry has decided to open a "Japan fashion week" in
Tokyo to promote Japanese brands to the world.
A large tent will reportedly be set up
in a Tokyo park for the event, which is scheduled to run
from the end of October to the beginning of November.
It will be promoted as "a Paris collection with a Tokyo
style."
Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry
Shoichi Nakagawa introduced plans for the fashion show
at a news conference on 2nd June. A meeting of promoters,
including distributors from department stores and the
apparel industry, material makers, and people from the
fashion industry, such as designers, will be held at the
ministry on 3rd June.
Industry sources said famous designers
in the Japanese fashion industry such as Rei Kawakubo
appeared in succession during the 1980s, but they often
moved their bases of work overseas.
Because of this the Japanese fashion
industry decided to hold an intensive Japanese fashion
show lasting about one week, like shows in New York and
Milan, to spread information on Japanese fashion to the
world.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
has designated fashion as an area to promote intellectual
asset-based industrial strategies, and officials hope
the fashion week will provide chances to produce attractive
threads and material that are only found in Japan, thereby
also supporting material manufacturers. |
