A COMPETITION titled "Africa in
Fashion 2005" for young Africa fashion designers
living in Africa is on the cards.
The competition is expected to take place
during the International African Fashion Festival in Niamey,
Niger from December 7 to 10.
A spokesman said the competition was
mainly for young fashion designers working in continental
Africa and the Indian Ocean.
"We are looking at countries within
sub Saharan Africa, the Indian Ocean (except La Reunion)
and the Maghreb and that includes Algeria, Libya, Morocco
and Tunisia.
"The aim of the competition is to
promote young talented African Fashion designers living
and working in Africa," he said.
Candidates must be between the ages of
18 to 35 and are freelance fashion designers with proof
of designs created in their name.
They should also be free from professional
commitments during the time of the competition and in
a position to present a minimum of five and a maximum
of 10 original works.
"A panel of fashion professionals
will meet in Paris in July to short-list 10 candidates
who will compete in a fashion show to be organised in
December of which the dates can be subject to change,"
he said.
Tilla Rudel, the curator of the "Africa
in Fashion" competition will appoint an international
jury that will meet in Niamey to select the three award
winners.
The jury will be made up of fashion designers,
professionals, journalists and the event's main partners.
The first prize comprises Le Fil d' or
(Golden Thread Award), a three month residency with a
Paris fashion house and a 5 000 Euro grant for creating
a collection.
The second winner will receive Le Fil
d' argent (Silver Thread Award) a one month residency
with a Paris fashion house and a 3 000 Euro grant for
creating a collection.
The third winner gets a Le Fil de cuivre
(Copper Thread Award) and a 2 000 Euro grant for creating
a collection. Applications should be submitted to the
Alliance Francaise of Harare before May 27.
