The Purdue men's golf team advanced
to the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional Championships
on Saturday in dramatic fashion.
Purdue tied for 10th place with Wichita
State and the two teams went to a playoff hole to decide
who moved on and who went home.
On Hole No. 10, Bobby Bennett and Pariya
Junhasavasdikul both collected pars and that was enough
to propel the Boilermakers to their fourth NCAA Championships
appearance in the last five seasons.
The Boilermakers fired a a 294 on Saturday
and totaled 875 over the three rounds. They finished only
nine shots from being in the top four. Augusta State won
the event with a total of 849.
Bennett finished tied for 20th after
a final-round 75. He was the top-placing Boilermaker.
Junhasavasdikul also carded a 74 in the
final round and tied for 43rd overall.
Senior Dustin Cone and sophomore Peter
Richardson both tied for 77th. Cone fired a 75. Richardsdon,
who struggled in the first two rounds, posted the lowest
round of the day for Purdue with a two-over 72.
Freshman Santiago Russi played a great
tournament and tied for 50th overall. He shot a 75 on
Saturday.
There were three regional sites with
27 teams at each regional. The top 10 teams from each
regional advanced to the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championships
on May 5 to 7. Each regional was a 54-hole event.
Purdue has advanced to four of the last
five NCAA Championships.
The Central Regional Championships were
hosted by Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Course in South
Bend. The course is a par 70 and was playing 7,011 yards.
