Jamshedpur, May 20: Colours and imagination
played riot at the National Institute of Fashion Designing
(NIFT) as students participated in a T-shirt designing
competition.
Noted fashion designer from Calcutta
Bobby Sen, who was also the judge, shared his expert tips
with budding designers. The competition was held as part
of the annual function of the designing institute to be
held on June 24.
More than 60 budding designers participated
in the competition putting in shape their creativity in
paints, sequins and beads.
Sen said, “The notion that designer wear
is expensive is almost fading away. Towns like Jamshedpur
are also adopting the style statement to follow the trend.
Designers should also make less expensive but fashionable
wear to suit the global market. Though profit is important,
the designers should make clothes of cheap material and
sell them at an affordable price.”
Facing the volleys of question by the
students, Sen admitted that the city was coming up on
the fashion scale but there was a need for experimentation.
“Designers should work to create a line
that can go with the season,” he said.
Citing an example of long skirts, which,
he said, were here to stay for the next two seasons, Sen
said they should work on variations of skirts and introduce
new designs.
Sen stressed on creativity as well as
fashion for summer. “From fabrics to colours, everything
need to be taken care of. And apart from the seasonal
changes, the global trend also has to be kept in mind,”
he said.
Elaborating on the summer wear for women,
Sen said natural fibres like cotton and khadi are in and
the most preferred colours are the peppermint range like
white, pink, blue and green.
While long skirts are in fashion, he
added, that it could be made gracious with a poncho, worn
over a sleeveless or a spaghetti top. “Though ponchos
are coming in slowly they are sure to pick up soon.” He
added that for men it was the loose fits that were most
common. “Low waist is out and people should experiment
more with high waist. Accessories for both men and women
need to be very minimal yet funky,” he said.
