Fashion in the frame

Source: news.com

Designer Gwendolynne Bur kins clothes have regularly been described as works of art, so it's only fitting her creations will end up in the National Gallery.

And gallery newcomer La Cigale, the saucy sister of the Young and Jackson Hotel's local nymphet Chloe, eyes the Melbourne designer's wares with interest.

Gwendolynne's latest range will star in a display of another type during next week's Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week in the Gallery Official Evening Parade on September 6.
Also featuring designs by Ess. Hoshika, Manvious, Out with Demons, Richard Nylon, TV and Vixen, the parade would blur the line between art and fashion.

Fashion shift sees big tops, skinny bottoms

Source: canada.com

The fashion industry in fact is ready to forget and forgive: Longtime nemesis The Legging has been welcomed back by women who are altering their uniform to tunic tops and slim bottoms.

It started on the runways, with Ralph Lauren showing loden green knit leggings under a comfortable cable knit wrap and Derek Lam pairing grey ones with a trapeze-shape coat.

Next come’s the Hollywood starlets such as Lindsay Lohan, who was photographed in knee-length leggings and a baby doll top. And even though it's still summer, women on the streets of New York by now are covering up their fresh-from-vacation tans with leggings.

Star-struck high school grads are racing to New York City's runways, but their highlights aren't set on the exciting lives of fashion models. Instead, the hit TV reality show Project Runway has given birth to a new generation of wannabe designers.

Cable network Bravo says Project Runway (tonight, 10 ET/PT) is No. 1 show of all time. More than 3.4 million viewers an episode have tuned in this period to watch contestants improvise casual dresses, beauty pageant gowns and three-piece suits using discount fabrics, household furnishings and even junk from a New Jersey recycling dump.

London's fashion forward

Source: chinadaily.com

The British Fashion Council has come up with a new plan to support, not new designers, but second age group labels which have a recognized presence in the fashion arena but still require a helping hand to get them to the next level.

Fashion Forward, sponsored by Westfield retail property group which is launching a fresh lifestyle and shopping development in White City in two years time? Would allow designers whose businesses are in a vital stage of their development to continue showing at the event, plus providing them with business mentoring services. I am thrilled that we've been able to launch this initiative with the support of Westfield, says Hilary Riva, chief executive of the BFC.

Fashion Week kicks off in San Francisco

Source: mercurynews.com

You will not see any familiar Bay Area fashion retailers such as Gap or Levi's showing at the third annual San Francisco Fashion Week. But that's specifically the point, says Erika Gessin, founder and producer of the home-based event that opens at the San Francisco Design Center Galleria on Wednesday.

It's really about exposing or promoting local talent on the brink, or more avant-garde couture talent, says Gessin, who runs Mystery Girl Productions of San Francisco. It's about opening doors.

Fashion for the Ages

Source: pasadenastarnews.com

Women in their 40s and 50s today are as healthy and beautiful as their mothers were at 30, and many women aren't frightened to show it off.

The good news is that some of the leading fashion trends of this year and next would be completely suitable for older women.

Pantsuits and "anything gray" are going to be enormous for fall, according to David Wolfe, original director for the New York-based Doneger Group, the world's biggest fashion consulting firm.

Retailers from Wal-Mart to Nordstrom pay plenty for Wolfe's words of insight on what's hot and what's not, and he says older women and their closets have many to look forward to this year.

"This spring, women were pretty happy with what's in the stores, and when fall comes, they are going to be ecstatic," he said. "There are so many grown-up clothes that are going to be flattering and sophisticated. The catch phrase is `60 is the new 30,' and it is in fact going to hold some water because older women are going to look beautiful in the fall clothes.

"We couldn't say that a couple of years ago."

Experienced fashion forecasters and marketing duo Jill Carrol from Color-waves and Neil Henson from Australian business, Fashion Bytes would be presenting revealing and interesting seminars on marketing and forecasting designs, trends and colors for the coming seasons at ‘fashion-source’, September 18 & 19, 2006.

Both Neil and Jill have been concerned in forecasting business for at least 25 and 10 years, correspondingly, and have presented workshops in Australia and New Zealand. Neil Henson has most lately been involved in presenting successful seminars for ‘Resenes’ on the pioneering concept of 5D marketing (using the five senses). A good example of this idea is Nike’s newest marketing campaign encompassing infusing their shoes with good-looking smells, therefore drawing customers in with this primal approach.
